Free live session · once a month
HPLC on a real instrument, live
45 minutes online. First we look at the idea on a simulator. Then we look at the same thing on a Waters ACQUITY UPLC, with Empower 3 on the screen. It's free, and you only need to register.

This month: from solvent bottle to peak
What each part of an HPLC does, in the order the liquid meets it: the solvent bottle, the pump, the injector, the column and the detector. If you run an HPLC and nobody showed you the inside of it, this one is for you.
On the simulator we'll change the flow rate and the solvent strength and watch the peak move. Then we'll follow the same path on the ACQUITY, part by part, and see where each setting lives in the Empower 3 instrument method.
How the 45 minutes run
- 15 minutes on the HPLC simulator from Dwight Stoll's group at Gustavus Adolphus College. It's free and runs in your browser, so you can try it after.
- 20 minutes with the camera on the ACQUITY and Empower 3 on the screen.
- 10 minutes for your questions. Send one when you register and I'll answer as many as the time allows.
Who it's for
Analysts who run HPLC or UPLC and want to see what the instrument is doing, and people learning Empower from my YouTube series. You don't need to know the simulator before you come.
Questions
- Is it recorded?
- Yes, and the recording goes on YouTube. Only my screen, the instrument and my voice are recorded. Your camera and microphone can stay off, and I read questions out without your name unless you tell me it's fine to use it.
- I can't make that time.
- Register anyway. I'll email you the recording, and you'll hear about the next date.
- When are the next ones?
- Wednesday 25 November 2026 and Wednesday 9 December 2026, same time. The topics are set a month ahead.
About the instructor
I've spent 14 years developing and validating LC-MS and HPLC methods in pharmaceutical, CRO, environmental and natural-product labs, after a Ph.D. in Janusz Pawliszyn's lab at Waterloo. 200+ scientists trained, 18 peer-reviewed papers. I teach what actually happens at the bench, including the parts that go wrong.
